With many people off work and driving up and down the country to visit their families, Christmas is not the ideal time for roadworks.

Although Swindon Borough Council says it tries to avoid putting roadworks in place throughout the festive period as much as possible, delays are still likely on a few roads.

To avoid getting stuck in traffic over Christmas and into the new year, we’ve put together a list of all the major roadworks affecting Swindon over the coming fortnight.

The Christmas roadworks to watch out for in 2023

December 24 - December 25

There are only two streets in Swindon that are expected to be hit by temporary roadworks on the big day itself, and these are works ongoing throughout December.

  • The Bungalows and Tulip Tree Close, Pinehurst (December 6 – January 9). Traffic control measures are in place here due to ongoing utility repair work carried out by Wales & West Utilities. Delays are likely.
  • The Prow, Pinehurst (December 8 – January 11). Traffic control measures are in place here due to ongoing utility repair work carried out by Wales & West Utilities.

  • Witts Lane and Glevum Close, Purton (January 2 at 8am - March 8 at 12pm). Traffic control measures will be in place due to utility work by Wales & West Utilities.
  • Malthouse Close (January 2 at 8am - February 9 at 12pm). Traffic control measures will be in place due to utility work by Wales & West Utilities.
  • Bibury Road and North Street (January 2 at 8.20am - January 5, 12pm). Traffic control measures will be in place due to utility work by Wales & West Utilities.
  • Calcutt Street (January 2 at 9.30am - January 3 at 3.30pm). Two-way traffic lights will be in place here due to highway drainage survey being conducted by Wiltshire Council.

As well as the roadworks which started on January 2, four more roads will be affected by roadworks starting on January 3.

  • M4 Westbound (January 3 at 8pm – January 4 at 6am). The M4 westbound between Junctions 14 and 15 will experience lane closures due to ‘technology work.’ Major delays are expected.
  • Station Road and Islington Street (January 3 at 9pm – January 4 at 6am). These roads will be closed in one direction due to Vodaphone conducting maintenance work.
  • The Broadway, Moredon (January 3 at 8.20am – January 8 at 12pm). Traffic control measures will be in place on this road due to utility repair work by Wales & West Utilities.
