Swindon’s hospital is set to get even busier in the build-up to Christmas with major strikes planned.
Industrial action by junior doctor members of the British Medical Association is scheduled at Great Western Hospital.
These will initially run from Wednesday, December 20 and Saturday, December 23 before more strikes are held between Wednesday, January 3 and Tuesday, January 9, 2024.
“We are expecting the coming days to be very busy as our services will be affected by industrial action,” said Dr Stephen Haig, Deputy Chief Medical Officer at GWH.
“Given the significant impact this will have, we ask that you only come to hospital if you really need to be here.
“There will be some cancellations to planned treatments however if you have an appointment with us, you should continue to come to the hospital unless we directly get in touch with you.
“You will be seen if you attend our Emergency Department or Urgent Treatment Centre, but please remain patient with our teams who will be prioritising those most in need of our attention.”
A spokesperson for Swindon Borough Council added: “These actions coincide with an already busy period for GWH, and while urgent and emergency care services will remain available, there is expected to be a significant impact on overall care and services.”
