A mum-of-three has opened a new cake shop in Swindon after originally starting the business at her home.
Oana Berendei, originally from Romania, came to Wiltshire from London with her three sons and began professionally baking in April 2021.
After discovering she had a talent for the delicate confectionery and cakes while baking under the guise of Oana’s Cakes, she decided to open up a shop in the town.
The new shop opened in November and can be found on Cricklade Road, at the Transfer Bridges roundabout end of the street.
“My three children caused me to start making cakes because when we moved here we didn’t find any traditional Romanian cakes in the area,” said Oana.
“I never knew that I could make cakes but when I started making them for family and friends they said it was really good but I didn’t trust myself.
“After working from home I noticed everyone really appreciated them and the business at home was going well so it made sense to open up an actual shop here in Swindon.”
The 40-year-old uses organic ingredients where she can to give her sweet creations that homemade care and feel.
“We are using Belgian chocolate mainly so that I can make them as homemade as possible,” said Oana.
“Some of the cakes have a taste of rum even though there is no alcohol inside which is quite refreshing.
“There are two tables inside the shop where customers can have a juice or a coffee so it is a really friendly atmosphere.
“I have put a lot of my own heart into this.
Oana’s start to life at the new shop has been going well, according to the Swindon mum who has been impressed with residents’ reactions to the food.
“The new shop is really good and the business has been great so far,” she said.
“It is just me at the moment which can be stressful at times, especially in the beginning but it’s much better now.
“I would love to have someone to help me but at the moment I can deal with it but if the business keeps growing I will be on the lookout for someone.
“I also love that even though most people have not tried the cakes before, they are still willing to give it a go.
“After they try them, they are coming back which is really amazing for us because we now have regular local customers.”
