While many people are still finishing off their festive leftovers, supermarkets in Swindon appear to have already moved on, with Easter eggs appearing on shelves.
The first Easter eggs for 2024 were spotted in stores across Swindon as early as December 9, and many supermarket chains began displaying their Easter eggs on Boxing Day.
Morrisons Daily on Victoria Road in Swindon is just one of the supermarkets displaying a variety of chocolate eggs on several aisles around the store.
One worker at the store revealed to the Adver: "The new Easter stock came in literally the day after Christmas.
“It is crazy considering the Christmas period isn’t even over yet.”
Over at Farmfoods on Moredon Road, Easter eggs have been on sale since the beginning of December.
“I took a photo of Easter eggs on December 9 and I was a bit surprised to see them on sale alongside the Christmas stuff,” said Swindon resident Richard Jones.
"I think any day after Boxing Day would be better, although I haven’t seen any Valentine cards or chocolate on sale yet," he pointed out.
Displays have also been spotted in various Tesco and Co-op stores across the UK before the New Year, much to the horror of many shoppers.
The commercialisation of Christian holidays has been a particular concern, as one Swindon local who does not wish to be named said: "Jesus is only two days old and supermarkets are already out here planning his demise.
"It does seem to me that the true meaning behind these Christian holidays has been lost by big brands who are just in a rush to move from one holiday to the next."
In 2024, Easter Sunday will take place on March 31, meaning that stores putting out chocolate eggs from early December are almost four months early.
But this is not the first time that Easter eggs have hit the shelves before December is even over.
Speaking in previous years about the early arrival, The Co-op has stated that from experience, they know some customers like to buy Easter eggs early and they want to give those people the option.
A spokesperson for Tesco also said: "We know some of our customers like to buy their eggs early so we have started selling a small selection in some of our stores."
