A Swindon resident took matters into his own hands after the bins outside his mother’s flats were left uncollected for months.

Igor Kaliszewski from the town centre was distressed to see the rubbish build up outside his 52-year-old mum’s block on Kennedy Drive.

He posted a photo of the piles of uncollected waste on Facebook and revealed that it had been an ongoing issue for months.

“It had been left for three months to build up there and whenever we come to see her with the kids, it is just growing and growing,” he said.

“My son was born on November 6, 2023, and the rubbish was already building up then.”

“In my opinion, it is not acceptable to leave rubbish for that many months as no developed country in the world should have its rubbish left for that long.

“I think they were bad before the new system but this latest scheme has made it even worse because they haven’t even been able to organise properly.”

After the 25-year-old’s post on social media, Labour councillors Mike Davies and Chris Watts acted swiftly to rectify the issue.

“It never gets fixed so we were very surprised to see that it had been dealt with today,” said Igor.

“It just goes to show how much of an impact Facebook has because if I hadn’t put it online the council would not have cared.

“They have now dropped off the new bags that everyone else already had and she is very thankful that it has been fixed.”

Cllr Davies, who is the Swindon Borough Councillor for Liden, Eldene and Park South, arrived on Saturday afternoon to clear up.

“The new waste collection service has been rolled out across the whole of Swindon, which has been a massive logistical exercise.

“It would seem that a particular block on Kennedy Drive got missed out from the letters and delivery of the new kit.

“As a result, they continued with the old presentation of waste, which meant they were not covered by the new rounds.

“I was alerted by a friend to the picture on a Facebook group, which was the first I knew of the problem, and after I checked it out myself I put it straight away on the SBC IT system, tagging Cllr Watts.

“Cllr Watts got in touch with me within a few hours, and we arranged to clear it today, and will follow up with the correct kit and all the info the block needs.”
