A huge new warehouse will be coming to Swindon.
GLP Ltd - which runs G park on the north side of the A419 where B&Q and Iceland already has enormous warehousing and delivery centres - has been permitted to put up a third building on the site, at the northern end of the site bound by Kingsdown Road and Highworth Road.
The entire site of the third warehouse, including its parking provision will be nearly three hectares in size.
GLP says the development is speculative, meaning it will build the warehouse before trying to find a tenant for it.
GLP told planners: “The site is located on the northern outskirts of Swindon, within a long-established employment location which has regional importance for warehousing and distribution.
“G Park Swindon is a large industrial area with excellent connections by road. The site is located west of another large industrial and commercial park and at the edge of Vickers Roundabout, making the site a much sought-after area for business and further industrial development.
"The site is located in a designated employment area.
“It is acknowledged that there are residential uses coming forward to the north of the site across Kingsdown Road, and the proposed scheme has been designed to ensure that the future residential amenity is protected.”
The developer and owner of the site said building the third warehouse on the site will improve options for pedestrians and active travel.
The company’s applications said: “In the current site conditions, there are no footways in the vicinity of the site along Kingsdown Road.
"The lack of pedestrian access surrounding the area creates an opportunity to link the current infrastructure on Highworth Road and Kingsdown Road through the proposed site.
"These works could improve permeability of the area and encourage more sustainable means of travel for those using the existing bus stop on Highworth Road."
It concluded: “The development respects the designation of the site for employment uses and respects the adjacent residential site and new retirement village and the surrounding industrial unit on the park, through careful consideration of its impact in terms of massing and elevational treatment.
“It will have a minimal impact on existing road infrastructure, and provides inclusive public pedestrian access through the site which links Kingsdown Road and Highworth Road.”
