A chicken shop in Swindon has temporarily closed after getting a zero food hygiene rating.
Rodbourne Royal Fried Chicken on Rodbourne Road was handed the score following a Food Standards Agency inspection on Thursday, January 18.
Swindon Borough Council’s Environmental Health team descended on the takeaway and found it to need “urgent improvement”.
This led to the chicken shop being handed a zero-out-of-five score, making it only one of two businesses to have the bottom rating.
Inspectors found that “major improvement” was necessary with regard to the takeaway’s hygienic handling of food.
This refers to the preparation, cooking, re-heating, cooling and storage of the food served and sold onsite.
The report also deemed the chicken shop’s management of food safety to require “major improvement”.
This regards having checks in place to ensure that food sold or served is safe to eat as well as evidence that staff know about food safety.
Improvement was also deemed “necessary” with the business’ cleanliness and condition of the facilities and building.
This refers to having an appropriate layout, ventilation, hand washing facilities and pest control to enable good food hygiene.
A sign taped to the shop's door could be seen on Sunday which said: "Shop under new management, being refurbished, opening soon!"
