A crackdown on drug driving and other causes of deadly crashes led to three arrests and dozens of police reports.

Wiltshire Police’s latest Project Zero operation in Swindon saw officers spend a day targeting 68 drivers who were committing any of the fatal five offences in a bid to reduce the number of casualties on the county’s roads.

The campaign provides more resources to target motorists who are driving at excess speed, drink or drug driving, using a handheld mobile phone while driving, not wearing a seatbelt, or driving in a careless or dangerous manner.

Among the arrests, police stopped a man in his 50s on Queensfield who provided a positive roadside breath test and was then arrested on suspicion of drink driving.

After officers carried out further checks, they also arrested him on suspicion of driving otherwise than in accordance with a driver’s licence and driving with no insurance.

He has since been released under investigation while enquiries continue.

Police arrested a man in his 40s in Blunsdon St Andrew after failing a roadside drug wipe test. He’s been released under investigation while enquiries continue.

A/Insp Will Ayres from the Roads Policing Unit said: “This is unacceptable behaviour. We are committed to identifying those who commit such offences in order to make our roads as safe as possible for all road users.”
