Tesco has issued an apology after shoppers visiting one of its stores on Valentine's Day were met with smells of sewage.

Customers shopping at the Ocotal Way branch of Tesco Extra in Swindon reported the smell of sewage on Wednesday.

A shopper who was at the store at around 2.30pm confirmed that there was a really strong smell of sewage at the entrance to the shop.

Swindon Advertiser: She also reported that the café was closed, there were no employees stationed at the customer service or cigarette kiosk and that the security guard who is normally stationed next to the toilets was standing outside of the store.

The shopper said: “As I walked up to the entrance there was a funny smell but I wasn’t sure if it was outside or from inside the store, as you walked in it became obvious that it was inside the store.

“It was vile."

She explained that it smelt like “sewage with a little bit of air freshener”.

Another said on Facebook: "Just been it's awful, but only at the entrance."

A third added: "I was in there not long ago and it made me feel [sick]."

A Tesco spokesperson said: “We apologise for this issue earlier today outside our Swindon Extra store.

“This was caused by a blocked drainpipe which has now been fixed. The store is open to welcome customers as usual.”

However, one of the customers who spoke with the Adver confirmed the smell remained even after the statement was provided.
