An area outside a town centre restaurant was cordoned of by police for hours as emergency services dealt with an incident.

Police cars, an ambulance and two fire engines were stationed outside Swindon Rendezvous between 4.45pm and 7.30pm on Thursday (February 15).

Wiltshire Police confirmed that the area had been cordoned off and road closed due to a mental health related incident.

Part of Princes Street running from Regent Circus to Gordon Road was closed heading towards Swindon Magistrates' Court.

Traffic ground to a halt, with those attempting to access Fleming Way having to carry on back round towards Regent Circus during the rush hour.

Later, the other side of Princes Street heading towards Regent Circus was also closed.

A spokesperson for Wiltshire Police wrote at the time of the incident: "We’ve closed a number of roads near to the Wyvern Theatre in Swindon town centre due to an ongoing mental health related incident.

"Please avoid the area of Princes Street and Beckhampton Street while the incident is dealt with."

A spokesperson for Dorset and Wiltshire Fire and Rescue Service said: “A crew and the aerial ladder platform from Swindon were called to Theatre Square, Swindon at 5.39pm yesterday evening to assist with a police incident. Our stop was in at 7.07pm.”

A spokesperson for the South Western Ambulance Service NHS Foundation Trust (SWASFT) said: “We were called at 4.50pm on Thursday, February 15 to an incident in Swindon.”
