A train passenger said to be high on laughing gas assaulted a police officer at Swindon railway station.

Lauren Williams, of Woodlands Avenue in Merthyr, Wales, had been travelling through Swindon on her way to a concert in London at around 11.30pm on January 31 when she was arrested for the attack.

The 21-year-old had been travelling with her boyfriend and when they got off in Swindon to meet some friends. Her boyfriend was arrested for a separate offence.

Williams, who was reportedly drunk and high on nitrous oxide at the time, was said to be in an emotional state and lashed out at PC Dartnal-Smith.

“Police were called to a disorder at the railway station where a female was being aggressive,” said prosecutor Keith Ballinger. "She had been drinking from a bottle of wine and was upset.

“When driving around the corner officers then saw her inhaling nitrous oxide and when they arrested her she lashed out and kicked a police officer.

“She said she hadn’t intended to hurt him and at the time was high on drugs and drunk.”

According to Tim Morgan, defending, Williams is a recent university graduate and she acted “out of character” due to intoxication.

“She was clearly very distressed,” he said.

After pleading guilty in front of Swindon Magistrates Court on Tuesday, February 20 to assault by beating of an emergency worker, Williams must now pay over £500 for her crime.

Williams will now pay a £364 fine as well as a £146 victim surcharge and £85 in court costs.
