A drug driver caused more than £1,700 in damage to the gates to a luxurious Wiltshire estate.

Alex Dos Santos, of London Road in Chippenham, has been sentenced for two offences at Swindon Magistrates Court.

The 37-year-old pleaded guilty to drug driving and criminal damage.

He drove a vehicle along Rommel Lane in Crudwell while unfit to drive through drugs and caused £1,782 to the electric gates of Charlton Park in Malmesbury on June 23, 2023.

The defendant has been banned from driving for 12 months, fined £100, and ordered to pay £200 in compensation as well as £85 in court costs.

The country estate in Malmesbury dates back to before 1086, when Charlton House was managed by Malmesbury Abbey, and has been owned by the Earls of Suffolk since near the end of the 16th century.

It covers 4,500 acres which include the Grade I-listed mansion, extensive parkland, arable farmland, Cotswold stone residential properties, and a commercial business park.

The house was converted into apartments in 1975.

The annual music festival WOMAD has been held on the grounds since 2007.
