A Swindon teacher has begun teaching a very different subject as he has started an inclusive night showing people how to DJ with vinyl.

Chris Mawdsley, 48, who teaches SEND children and has been DJing for two years, runs the event each first Saturday of the month to bring people together and share music.

The unique event is due for its second instalment on Saturday (March 2) in the Little Hop allowing anyone to bring their own records and try DJing under Chris’ guidance.

Chris said: “I have been DJing for a little bit but I just wanted to offer something different.

“With this you get an opportunity to be part of the night and shape the night.

“It is lovely to teach people and see people enjoying playing music in the same way that I do and getting that same enjoyment from it.

“I think it's just really nice, I really enjoy passing that opportunity on.”

Since launching, he has had a large interest and for this weekend he has had to turn people away.

The event is open to all experience levels and focuses on inclusivity with this instalment featuring all female DJs to celebrate International Women’s Day.

People are allowed to bring whatever music they like, leading to some unlikely combinations.

“If you think it's a banger, you can bring it.”

“The beauty was that actually we didn't know what kind of music people were going to bring.

“I think the people who took part really loved it and I can't wait to do it again. The people that were listening appreciated kind of the right diversity of music and almost not knowing what was coming next, which was kind of great.”

He added: “We had country and western going into Japanese psych and then into northern soul.”

The event gives people the opportunity to not only learn a new skill, but also hear their own music in a different way.

Chris recalled: “One of the people who played last time said it was just amazing to hear their tunes in a louder environment than they would at home and the public listening to them in the same way that they listen to them.”

The event runs from 7.30pm to 11pm on Saturday at the Little Hop in Devizes Road.
