Cardinal Coffee shop, situated within the walls of the historic 15th century church of St Peter’s in Marlborough, is one of the town’s most attractive coffee spots.
The shop takes its name from Cardinal Thomas Wolsey, who was ordained as priest in 1498 here at St Peter’s.
The church dates back to before Wolsey though, with links to the former castle. It is thought that the first church on the site was completed by 1100.
Cardinal Coffee embraces its rich history, and customers can enjoy a coffee surrounded by beautiful stain glass windows, and even the former pews are used as seating.
Delicious cakes made locally, as well as hot drinks and lunch are served, and the café is open from 10am-4pm Monday to Saturday. A notable feature is the charming crockery, including patterned tea pots, setting Cardinal Coffee apart from the chains.
It proves to be a spacious, calm, and relaxed place to enjoy a coffee, catch up with friends, or settle down to some work.
The baristas are warm and welcoming, making it an enjoyable experience overall.
While St Peter’s is no longer a religious institution, it retains its sense of legacy. The church hosts events for the public, including exhibitions and other activities for local residents and tourists. Events in the near future include St Peter’s ‘Spring Fair’ on Saturday 2nd March 10am-3pm, and the ‘Stand Up Comedy’ evening on Saturday 2nd at 8pm.
Marlborough’s Cardinal Coffee is a great place to come and enjoy some high-quality cake and coffee in an attractive and historic space.
