An 18th-century pub in Old Town which went through a major refurbishment last year is continuing to go from strength to strength with plans for further upgrades and secret events.
The Steam Railway Co pub underwent a refurbishment in March 2023 which saw a new modern bar added, along with upgraded TVs and sound systems.
Now manager Steve Griffiths has revealed that the work has certainly paid off, although more enhancements are on the way.
“It’s definitely brought in a few new customers for sure. We still have our loyal local people coming in here but we notice that there’s a real range of age groups in here now from 18 right the way through.
“Since the refurbishment, we’ve also noticed that we have more women coming in now which is nice to see.”
Owned by Punch Pubs, the Steam offers a real warm atmosphere where there’s always a familiar friendly face at the bar.
Many of the customers come in for a social place to watch the live-streamed sporting events, but the pub also hosts several DJs and soul music events, focusing on a different genre of music each month.
“We never really have any trouble in here and all the people know each other or get to know each other. The pub has certainly been through a bit of turmoil but it’s just a good atmosphere now,” Steve added.
“What I love about the area is that you know you can come to Old Town and there is something here for everyone.
“There’s lots of pubs and bars and cafes around here but they’re all such good quality and offer something different so it doesn’t really feel like a competition.”
But although the Steam Railway has come on leaps and bounds since Steve took over and reopened the place in November 2019, he’s certainly not one to stop pushing to be better.
The owner revealed that the pub will be focussing on structural improvements, bringing in a new menu, and he even hinted at some spectacular plans in the works for the 2024 Euros.
“We’re really excited about the Euros this year and we’re planning something particularly special for it which we’re keeping a secret for the moment.
“All I can say is that it’s going to be quite striking so watch this space.
