A 100-metre cordon was put in place, and residents in the area were urged to stay indoors with the windows closed.

Now, a manager at the gas board has confirmed that one property was evacuated and the area has been made safe.

Darren Keighley, Wales & West Utilities gas emergency service manager for Swindon said: “We were called to reports of a gas leak in the Mead Way area of Swindon today (07 March) and sent a team of engineers to investigate.

"On arrival, we found a leak on some gas apparatus running beneath the ground and began work to make it safe.

“As a precaution, we evacuated a nearby property and closed the road.

“The area has now been made safe; we have reopened the road and allowed people to re-enter the property.

“The situation has been constantly monitored, it does not pose any safety concerns and there has been no impact on local gas supplies.”

The company confirmed that the property evacuated was undergoing renovation, which affected contractors working on it.
