A popular tapas bar has received a one-out-of-five food hygiene rating in its latest check.
Tapas Del Mundo on Wood Street has an average rating of 4.3 from 403 Google reviews, yet received the second bottom rating from council inspectors in February.
A one-star rating can mean that major improvement is necessary to how food is stored, handled, prepared, or the premises' general cleanliness.
A spokesperson for the restaurant said: “Obviously it was upsetting. It wasn't where our standards are. On that day, they found a few things we weren't happy with with food storage.
“It had obviously slipped through, and has been resolved.”
He explained that the issue was with old food being retained and not being thrown away, but that it was never served to customers.
He added: “We've made a vast amount of changes. There's every reason for our customers to be confident that how we store our food and what is delivered to them on the plate is safe and of good quality.”
Food safety inspectors since revisited and were happy with changes they saw, and James is now awaiting an official reinspection which will happen ‘imminently’.
Last year, the Adver reviewed Tapas Del Mundo and was impressed by the food, saying: “I was completely full and had enjoyed every bite, so there was little to complain about.”
