More houses could be built on a former industrial site on the edge of the old Honda site which is being redeveloped into a huge warehouse and industrial complex.

Developer Hartwell PLC has put in an application to Swindon Borough Council planners to build 57 houses on the recently cleared site north of Thornhill Road.

The site is locally known as The Crown Timber site after the recently demolished sawmill and timber business that used it.

The company wants to build up to 57 houses there with access of Thornhill Road.

The plans submitted say the mixture of housing would be eight single-bedroom flats, three two-bed flats, 11 two-bed houses, 27 three-bed houses and eight houses with four bedrooms.

The application says: “The proposed housing will take the form of a mix of detached and semi-detached homes, together with a key marker apartment building, and a single coach house style apartment.

The layout shows that all dwellings can front onto the street with off-street parking and private gardens. The houses will all have two allocated parking spaces, and 15 visitor parking spaces will also be provided across site.

Swindon Advertiser: How the houses might be laid out on the site

The drawings submitted show the edges of the site will be lined with trees and greenery, and that there would be access from the new estate to the public open green space. Planned for the site next door, called The Paddock.

Planning permission has already been granted for the development of six detached houses on that site.

There will also be a pedestrian footway from the southwest of the site to Thornhill Road and the bridleway running alongside the road.

The drawings show the principal road through the site should run north from Thornhill Road before curving to the northeast.

A loop to the west of that would see 25 houses built on either side of it, and there would also be access to the former Honda site, now called Panattoni Park for emergency vehicles, but not other traffic.

The developer says that the granting of a previous outline planning permission for 47 houses in 2018 on the site “established the principle of development and details of access, however, it was not possible to deliver this scheme for viability reasons.

"The reason for this submission is therefore to secure a revised quantum of housing.”

No decision has been yet made on the plan, with a determination date of May 2 set.
