A man in his 60s has died at the scene of a crash in Akers Way, police have confirmed.

The busy Swindon road was initially closed in both directions by Wiltshire Police at roughly 11.30am after reports of a "serious collision" involving two vehicles.

But in an update provided by Wiltshire Police on Sunday afternoon, it was revealed that a man in his 60s had suffered a "medical incident" and was pronounced dead at the scene.

UPDATES: Akers Way closed by police for hours after crash

A police spokesperson said: "Akers Way has reopened following a road traffic collision earlier today.

"Officers were called to the scene around 11:30am on Sunday morning.

"Sadly, following what is thought to be a medical incident, a man in his 60s died at the scene.

"A file is being prepared by the coroner and our thoughts are with his friends and family at this difficult time."

Wiltshire Police's initial statement at the time the serious crash was reported said: "There has been a serious collision on Akers Way, Moredon involving two vehicles.

"The road is closed and we would advise drivers to avoid the area.

"Thank you for your patience."

The road remained closed for hours as emergency services attended.

Roadblocks were in place from the Purton Road roundabout end and the Beaney View turning end, with motorists approaching from the Cheney Manor side reaching the block and needing to turn around.

Several police cars and two ambulances could be seen further down the road fairly close to the Nova Hreod Academy sign some distance away from the roadblock.

Members of the public were also not allowed to use the footpaths.

The closure caused heavy traffic in the area with cars being diverted to Moredon Road and Cheney Manor Industrial Estate.

Paramedics remained at the scene until the road was then fully reopened at around 3pm.
