The death of a much-loved mum has prompted calls for a pedestrian crossing to be installed on a busy Swindon road.

Kelly Nixon, 36, was hit by a car on Whitbourne Avenue on February 22 and was taken to hospital for treatment of injuries and was later discharged.

Wiltshire Police announced days later Kelly had died, sparking an investigation into the circumstances.

Officers confirmed that hat her death was being treated as 'non-suspicious' and was not linked to the incident on Whitbourne Avenue.

But, Kelly's loved ones still feel something needs to be done about a road they feel is to dangerous for pedestrians.

Kelly's friend Carly Read has started a petition calling for a pedestrian crossing to be installed on the road so that people can navigate it safely.

In the petition, she said: "My best friend was tragically struck while crossing Whitbourne Avenue in Swindon.

"She sadly passed away the following day.  This devastating incident has exposed the urgent need for safer pedestrian infrastructure on this road.

"Whitbourne Avenue is a busy thoroughfare with high-speed traffic, and yet it lacks adequate facilities to ensure pedestrian safety.

"The absence of a designated pedestrian crossing poses significant risks to those who traverse this road daily, especially children and elderly residents."

She added: "We urge local authorities to implement a pedestrian crossing along Whitbourne Avenue as soon as possible. This will not only enhance safety but also serve as a tribute to my friend's memory and help prevent similar tragedies from happening again.

"Please sign this petition and join us in urging our local council to take swift action towards making our streets safer for everyone."

Kelly's death had a heavy impact on a community that she was such a big part of.

Friend Sharon Bradshaw, has since started a fundraiser on behalf of Kelly's family to help contribute towards her funeral and to help Kelly's son Jonathan.

"I just want to say how incredible she was at supporting the community.

"She volunteered at the church and was my social team member in my slimming world groups that were held at the church too.

"So many people knew her and are touched by her passing."
