A village pub in the north of the county is set to be converted into flats after it was deemed an “unviable” business.
The Vale of White Horse Inn is located on the edge of Minety, approximately 12 miles outside Swindon, and has been on the market since 2019.
Having received no offers, the owner decided the best use of the site would be residential and sought permission in 2022 to transform it into seven flats.
While the application received five comments of support, seven residents objected to the plans, stating that the village is already “inadequately served” in terms of hospitality.
The applicant, who has owned The Vale of White Horse Inn since 2002, provided a statement which argued that there was no “realistic chance” of the pub becoming a viable business in the foreseeable future.
It read: “I have recently been forced to close our kitchen, lay-off staff and make the remaining chef redundant.”
The plans have now been given the go-ahead and will see the basement, ground and first floors of the building providing two flats each, with the final flat to be built in the attic.
