One person died at the scene of a serious crash on the M4 on Tuesday, police have confirmed.
In a statement, Avon and Somerset Police also said that four people were taken to hospital with non-life-threatening injuries after the incident on the westbound carriageway between junctions 18 (Bath) and 19 (Bristol).
A statement from the force says: “Despite the best efforts of emergency services, one person sadly died at the scene.
“Our thoughts are with their family during this difficult time, they are being offered support by a specialist family liaison officer.”
The M4 has fully reopened five hours after being closed to keep the crash site sterile while investigations were conducted.
Police thanked the public for their patience.
There were long queues throughout the evening rush hour and beyond stretching as far as Chippenham as drivers exited in Wiltshire to follow diversion routes. Roads around Chippenham and the A420 were much busier than usual.
Emergency services including an air ambulance were called to the scene while drivers were trapped for several hours.
It added: “If you witnessed the collision, or have any information or relevant footage which could aid our investigation, please call us.”
Witnesses are asked to call 101 quoting reference number 5224077629.
