Public toilets in a popular town centre car park have been vandalised for the third time - after youths said they were "bored".
Royal Wootton Bassett has faced several vandalism incidents involving public toilets in the past six months which have caused the facilities to close while repair work is carried out.
The disabled toilet in Borough Fields car park was the only public toilet which remained open due to previous vandalism incidents.
But on Tuesday, April 2, a group of youths took to the car park to vandalise and urinate over the disabled toilets, leaving them in a dire state.
Working with the CCTV team at Royal Wootton Bassett Town Council, the Neighbourhood Police Team were quickly able to identify the individuals responsible.
The young criminals told the police they "did it because they were bored."
The disabled toilet has now been reopened for public use after the Town Council Grounds Team acted quickly to clear up the damage and mess left behind and ensure that at least one toilet was available for use.
But locals and town councillors are outraged that yet another toilet had to be repaired.
"This is another incident that wastes time and public money from across the Town Council and Wiltshire Police," said Mark Hopkins, Chief Officer at Royal Wootton Bassett Town Council.
"I will discuss the next steps with the police and a potential meeting with these youths.
"This is currently the only public toilet that is open, while we wait for repairs to be completed to the other two toilets, following vandalism early this year."
The toilets at Boroughfields, near to Costa Coffee and Specsavers, were last broken into on Saturday, December 16, just three months prior.
“The door was kicked in, breaking the automatic locking system and door frame, and the inside area trashed,” said Mark Hopkins at the time.
“Urine was sprayed everywhere, especially on the baby changing unit.”
A member of the Town Council Grounds Team who attended the toilets that evening spotted the vandalism and was able to secure the door and report the incident to 101.
“We are one of the few councils that still provide this service, but vandalism has stopped so many. This is encouraging those that set the budget to remove the toilets,” said local resident Julie Buchanan.
A similar also took place on June 8, 2023, when two men on bikes caused criminal damage to the same toilets.
The men kicked the doors multiple times causing damage to the locks which cost the council approximately £350 to replace.
