Residents in Lawn called the police shortly before 3am on Wednesday morning after witnessing a man trying car and van door handles in the area.
The officers who attended the scene included Police Dog Bree and her handler, who helped to locate a suspect in an alleyway nearby after carrying out a search of the neighbourhood.
The man, aged in his 40s from Swindon, has been arrested on suspicion of vehicle interference.
He remains in custody at Gablecross Police Station for further questioning.
Police are appealing for further witnesses and information that could help their investigation.
A Wiltshire Police spokesperson said: "A man is currently in custody arrested on suspicion of vehicle interference in Swindon.
"We’d urge residents to ensure all vehicles are left locked overnight and remove all valuables from inside if possible.
"Anyone with doorbell footage or CCTV which could assist our enquiries should call 101 and quote crime reference number 54240040529."
