Weeks of uncertainty regarding the fate of a post office inside Co-op has been resolved, as the Post Office speaks out.
The Co-op on Cricklade Road is due to close permanently on April 21, 2024.
Although there are no signs of closure from the outside, a spokesperson for the Midcounties Co-op head office was approached by the Adver and confirmed that "the store is no longer fit with the long-term strategy."
"We have now exchanged on a sale of the site to an independent retailer who will continue to operate a food retail store on the site," said a spokesperson for the company.
But the original statement issued made no mention of what would happen to the Post Office counter inside the store, and staff told the Adver they had been "told nothing."
With rumours continuing to circulate, Post Office has now confirmed that the counter will not close.
A Post Office spokesperson said: “We can confirm that this branch will continue to operate at the current location.
"The Midcounties Co-op and Clive Parade Post Office is due to close on April 21 and it will re-open the following day. The Post Office will re-open that lunchtime.”
A spokesperson for Midcounties Co-op added: “The Post Office will continue to operate under the new owners."
