Police have issued a warning to parents after finding larger-than-usual laughing gas canisters around Swindon.
The Stratton, Central Swindon North, and West Swindon neighbourhood policing teams are raising awareness of the dangers of nitrous oxide and the new type of packaging used to contain it.
On November 8, 2023, The government introduced a ban as part of its antisocial behaviour action plan which classified nitrous oxide as a Class C drug under the Misuse of Drugs Act 1971.
A spokesperson said: "Do you remember seeing little silver bullet shaped cannisters littered all over the place? But now not so much?
"They’re nitrous oxide canisters – or laughing gas – which is now a controlled drug so it is illegal unless you’re in hospital or a professional kitchen.
"The canisters being used by those trying to get high have changed a lot.
"They are much bigger, therefore putting users at a greater risk of passing out, developing breathing difficulties, and suffering cold burns.
"We are finding a lot of foot-long blue canisters, usually called ‘Magic Whip’ or ‘Mr Whip’.
"Parents, carers, and those working with young people please be aware, and talk to them about the dangers."
