New signs put up in Swindon town centre for the benefit of visitors have upset some residents - particularly fans of the closed Oasis leisure centre.
The signs have been put up as part of the improvement works to Railway Village and the Heritage Action Zone.
The colourful signs show visitors landmarks such as the Health Hydro, the Carriage Works, The David Murray John Tower and the Mechanics’ Institute.
The map also covers the North Star area of central Swindon, and here’s where the problems begin.
The general area designation of 'North Star' is over North Star House. But over the site of the Oasis centre are the words: 'North Star Development'.
The campaign group Save Oasis Swindon is not impressed.
The group’s X account featured pictures of the signs and said: “The Oasis name has vanished on the new town centre signs!
“Yes, the Oasis is closed currently but it is a grade II listed landmark. Why has it been airbrushed from Swindon’s map? Ridiculous.
“Oasis should be given as much street cred as all the other listed buildings. Closed or not closed.”
Heritage campaigner Angela Atkinson also joined in writing “That’s less than ideal. Was it Swindon Council directly though? Or the HAZ/The Works? Either way - I’d say that’s a boo-boo.
“The Oasis is listed and is as much heritage as the Mechanics’ and the Health Hydro. “
Leader of the council Councillor Jim Robbins initially responded: “Not sure why this has happened, and whether a decision has been made not to signpost a closed centre.
“I wouldn’t read anything else into it. Happy to make sure that the signs include the Oasis once it reopens.”
And a Swindon Borough Council spokesperson said the rebuilt Oasis would feature on the maps once it has been built and opened: “The new signage within the Railway Village is designed to highlight and celebrate Swindon’s heritage in the area and help visitors navigate historic landmarks.
“Historic England provided funding for this signage, as part of the Heritage Action Zone, and it will be rolled out across the town centre as and when regeneration schemes are completed.
“As well as highlighting historic sites and key landmarks, the signage is also designed to be changed and updated as Swindon and the area evolves in the future.
“These updates will include the Oasis development when it is complete and the leisure centre will be a prominent feature when re-opened.”
