Nostalgic photos show the heyday of the Mechanics Institute and how it has changed since closing down.
These images from Swindon Libraries' Local Studies department capture the years when the Railway Village landmark welcomed countless visitors to enjoy a night of music and entertainment.
A lavish Regal Ballroom hosted performances from the Railway Band and Johnnie Stiles, amongst others, as staff and stewards behind the bar kept tipples topped up.
Some guests often stopped by to browse books in the library or peruse the stalls of a market set up behind the Grade II*-listed building.
The institute's stunning exterior often appeared on postcards in the late 1800s and early 1900s while also providing inspiration for photographers during much of the 20th century.
It closed in 1986 and has been left derelict since then, though recent maintenance work has been carried out to restore the building to its previous condition.
Swindon Borough Council, estimates that fully renovating it would cost over £25 million and is working with Historic England to hash out a plan for its future.
