Swindon residents are being warned of a scam which has been costing vulnerable people money.
The scam involves the offenders attending addresses of vulnerable or elderly people in the Stratton area – usually after they have had new roofing fitted.
They claim they are attending to inspect the work, and once inside the address they go into the loft, claim there is a leak which needs to be fixed, give the resident a quote and ask for a deposit before leaving.
Once they receive a deposit they keep returning with reasons as to why they need full payment.
PC Charley Wilmott said: “This scam has been taking place in the Stratton area, and often the scammers claim to be from reputable companies. Please – if you think you may have been a victim, get in touch and let us know. Do not feel embarrassed – these people are often extremely convincing and forceful when taking advantage of often vulnerable people.
“Please be vigilant and if you have concerns please call 101 or 999 in an emergency.”
Police ask that anyone with further information about this particular scam should call 101 and quote reference number 54240040404.
