Plans for a national retailer to fill an empty unit at one of Swindon's biggest shopping centres seem to be off.
When Sports Direct closed at the Orbital Shopping Park, it appeared Superdrug was set to take its place.
A planning application was made by the firm to Swindon Borough Council, which requested permission to change the frontage of the former Sports Direct to include the Superdrug brand.
This application was approved in January, but no visible progress has been made at the empty unit despite progress being seen at another location elsewhere.
Now a spokesperson for the company has confirmed these plans are off.
They said: "There won’t be a store at Orbital shopping centre at this moment in time."
Instead, it seems Superdrug will be putting all of its attention into a new store at Greenbridge Retail Park, with advertisements for an upcoming store and jobs being put up at the former Wilko.
This new store is scheduled to be open to customers in just a few months.
The Superdrug spokesperson said: "We are delighted to confirm that a new Superdrug store will be opening at Swindon Greenbridge Retail Park in the summer.
"Our continued investment into our brick-and-mortar retail estate, as well as online, allows us to grow the presence of Superdrug and provide seamless accessibility and experience, regardless of how customers choose to shop.
"We are confident that local customers will love and welcome the new store and very much look forward to welcoming them through the doors in June to explore a wide range of popular health and beauty brands.”
Plans are also still ongoing for Hollywood Bowl to move into the former PC World building in the other section of Greenbridge, with just an empty Laura Ashley and Maplins to fill on that side of the retail park.
Sports Direct closed its store earlier this year, leaving the Orbital unit empty for a few months.
