A man from Swindon has successfully completed the London Marathon in a wheelchair and he is already planning his next challenge to raise money for charity.
Wayne Burton, 40, raised over £3,000 for spinal research by completing London Marathon in six hours and 38 minutes in his wheelchair.
Wayne was left paralysed from the chest down after an accident as a jockey 16 years ago, but that hasn’t stopped him from enjoying other sports, like wheelchair basketball.
Some of his previous charity events include a skydive, an annual fishing match and a group fundraiser with other disabled jockeys, covering 560 miles in nine days by swimming, pushing a wheelchair and cycling, where they raised £100,000.
He said: “The London Marathon looked fun and the experience and support was unbelievable. I’ve always had my eye on doing something big and now I’ve done it, I’m thinking ‘what’s next?’”
“It’s not all about the money though, it’s about raising awareness of the charity. I’m trying to show that, although I’m paralysed, these things are still doable and you can still achieve goals in your life. You don’t have to sit indoors and watch TV just because you’ve got a disability.”
