The MECA in Swindon has a long history, dating back to 1929 when it opened as The Regent Theatre.
Since then it has been an Odeon, a bingo hall and closed and reopened, as one of Swindon’s biggest entertainment venues.
In the latest development in its nearly 100-year history, the MECA has received its latest food hygiene rating on April 9, 2024.
The venue received a one, meaning that “major improvement is necessary”.
Unlike most ratings, no further breakdown was provided for MECA’s inspection.
As well as a roster of regular events, MECA is a wedding venue with packages starting from £750.
A sample menu includes a variety of seafood, meat and vegetarian options.
The venue has generally positive online feedback, with 4.1-star Google reviews.
Previous guests to have visited the MECA include Nigel Farage, Katie Hopkins and Gok Wan, as well as musicians such as Busted’s Charlie Simpson.
The Food Standards Agency say that each local authority plans a programme of inspections every year. The frequency of inspections depends on the potential risk to public health.
Ratings include handling of food, how food is stored, how food is prepared, cleanliness of facilities and how food safety is managed.
MECA declined to comment on why they received the rating, or what steps they would be taking to improve it.
