An investigation into the death of a Swindon man who died in police custody is ongoing.
The Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC) has released details of its investigation into the incident, which happened on Sunday, May 19, at Gablecross Police Station in Swindon.
It is believed 37-year-old Piotr Rak, whose family has since paid tribute to him, died in custody after becoming unwell.
Investigators have since begun gathering evidence.
An IOPC spokesperson said: “We have begun an independent investigation into the circumstances surrounding the death of a man in custody at Gablecross police station in Swindon on Sunday morning.
“We understand that the man had been held in custody over the weekend and became unwell on Sunday morning (May 19).
“An ambulance arrived soon after but sadly he was pronounced dead at around 9am.
“We were notified by Wiltshire Police shortly after and declared an independent investigation.
“IOPC investigators attended the police post-incident procedures to begin gathering evidence.”
Wiltshire Police announced Piotr’s death in a statement on Sunday night but added it would be inappropriate to comment further during the investigation.
