A pub in Swindon has received a top food hygiene score under new management, despite challenges beyond their control affecting their business.

The Tawny Owl in north Swindon was taken over by landlord, Nic Lee, at the end of November, after it celebrated its 20th anniversary, and he has since redecorated, refreshed the menu and brought in weekly live music events.

On Thursday, May 16, Swindon Borough Council carried out a hygiene inspection, where food safety officers awarded the pub the maximum rating of five – up from last year’s score of four.

Their hygienic food handling and the management of food safety was deemed ‘very good’ and the condition of facilities and the building were ranked as ‘good’.

Nic said: “We have worked hard to ensure that all staff are aware of their obligations to food hygiene procedures and the completion of the necessary paperwork.

"Our new Head Chef, Deanna, has been instrumental in ensuring that all staff are compliant and she monitors everything closely.  I think all this has contributed to our success story, not only getting five stars this time, but in the whole feel of the kitchen team.

“The regulars can also be assured that everything is being done safely and correctly and they can have confidence in what they are eating. We are very proud to have taken our score up to the maximum and it shows our hard work and improvements have paid off.”

But the owners have also faced challenges to their footfall due to Thames Water carrying out work in their car park.

“Thames Water took over our car park in the middle of last year, reducing it by more than half. We have been severely restricted in the number of people that have been able to park to attend the pub and along with all the disruption the work has caused, it has reduced some of the events we have been able to hold”, Nic added.

“The work they are doing is obviously essential for the local community with new pipes being laid, so that they can avoid leaks, and that’s why we have been working closely with Thames Water and their contractors wherever possible.

“We were originally told we would get the parking back in early February, but we have now been told that it is unlikely to be until October.”

Thames Water was approached for comment.
