Last year saw a rise in mortgage possession claims and subsequent home repossessions in Swindon, new figures reveal.

Data from the Ministry of Justice shows there were 66 mortgage possession claims made in Swindon between March 2023 and 2024 – 13 of these led to a property being repossessed by a bailiff.

There were 58 claims and nine homes repossessed in the previous year.

President of Law Society, Nick Emmerson, said: “We are concerned about the number of people who are at risk of becoming homeless.

“With the cost of living crisis and high interest rates, many are struggling with rent and mortgage payments and are at risk of losing their homes.”

Landlords made 201 rent arrears claims in March 2023 to 2024, with 47 resulting in repossession, up from 155 claims the previous year.

The charity StepChange offers advice and support with mortgage and rent arrears.

Policy manager, Jonathon Chesterman said: “Rent or mortgage payments are priority bills, so if you are in arrears with these payments, they should always be addressed before any consumer credit debt.

“Mortgage lenders have a regulatory responsibility to treat borrowers fairly, offering support and forbearance for people who are in difficulty.”
