A television show was dedicated to judging a hotel and village close to Swindon.
Competitors on Channel 4 series Four in a Bed were largely positive about the Vale Hotel in Cricklade - but had one complaint about the village.
On Tuesday night (May 28) was the turn of three rival hotel manager duos to sleep at the hotel, be entertained and eat breakfast - before leaving a review.
They were impressed by the rooms, costing £75 per night when filmed, with Karl and Rohini Emanuelsson saying: “Nice and spacious with a lot of light.”
Francesca Mammone and Maurizio Redaelli also said their room was “big” and “spacious”, and the pillows and bed were “comfortable and firm”.
Nick Duriez and Tim Pacey were prepared to be harsh, in return for criticisms from the Vale Hotel’s managers at the time, Ian Cox and Tayla Barnes.
But they said: “That actually looks quite good”, and described the shower as a “Tardis”.
As well as the hotel, guests also left comments about the Cricklade itself.
Karl and Rohini worried on arrival: “Quite a lot of traffic - it’s a bit busy, hopefully we are at the back.”
After a night’s sleep, these worries were confirmed.
In bed, Rohini said, "It’s a little village but it’s like a parade going on out there.”
Francesca Mammone and Maurizio Redaelli echoed: “Despite the double glazing and the shutters the noise comes through.”
However, Maurizio Redaelli said: “It’s in the middle of nowhere which is good because I like places in the middle of nowhere.”
Guests were treated to an afternoon at the Cotswold Wildlife Park and breakfast at a nearby cafe, Barista, both of which everyone enjoyed.
Despite most guests saying they would rather have had breakfast in the hotel, the Vale did not offer breakfast at the time and so this was not possible.
Karl said he was “pleasantly surprised” by the huge potion sizes in Barista and good quality ingredients.
At the end of the show, the three pairs left feedback with the hosts.
The highest scores were for the hosts themselves, called “caring” and “lovely”, and the facilities.
The lowest score was for sleep due to the traffic noise, which was given a seven.
Despite positive reviews, only one pair, Nick and Tim said they would stay there again, with the others being put off by Cricklade’s traffic noise.
The Vale Hotel is now managed by owners Mark and Helen Ingle.
Four in a Bed airs on Channel 4 at 6pm on Wednesday, Thursday and Friday this week.
