Drivers in Swindon have been left frustrated after being issued penalty charge notices in a hotel car park.

Several people have reported being issued a penalty charge notice for £100 - £60 if paid within two weeks - by the company Parkingeye, after briefly parking in the Campanile Hotel on Great Western Way, often when using the InPost lockers.

Last week the Adver reported on several similar incidents of people being fined by the same company in the Great Western Way Home Bargains car park outside of store opening hours.

Carla Shailes received a fine when she parked up to use the InPost lockers.

“You get 10 minutes before a fine. I’d been using the lockers for months and no issues even with the parking rules”, she explained.

“You need to scan the QR code on the side of the lockers. They’ve put it in a stupid place rather than at the front where the screen is. Pop your registration number in and you won’t get fined. Or if you have a fine already, ask the hotel for help. Mine was cancelled thankfully.”

Ellie Cresswell felt there was no other choice but to pay the £60 fine when she was caught out.

Ellie said: “I was there for half an hour as I was picking up a parcel which ended up being in the hotel itself and the staff member told me it would be round with the lockers. I did end up having to pay the fine - otherwise it was going up to £100 - so I paid the £60. I’m still very upset and angry with it all."

“There was a sign but nothing about if you are picking up parcels and nothing about a time limit before getting fined.”

A spokesperson for Parking Eye said: “The car park at Campanile Hotel, Swindon, features a car park management solution due to non-patrons of the hotel parking for long periods of time and abusing the parking facilities.

“The car park features 28 prominent and highly-visible signs providing information on how to use the car park responsibly, including guidance on how visitors need to register at the reception at times of use.

“We would add that Parkingeye operates a BPA (British Parking Association) audited appeals process, which motorists can use to appeal their Parking Charge. If anyone has mitigating circumstances, we would encourage them to highlight this by appealing.”
