Survivors of rape and sexual assault in Swindon and Wiltshire are set to receive essential care items, as part of a national scheme.

The Wash Bag Project will distribute personal wash bags to clients at Sexual Assault Referral Centres (SARCs).

Each wash bag, a small gesture of comfort during a distressing time, contains personal care necessities.

Items including shampoo, shower gel, toothpaste, a comb, lip balm, and a toothbrush have been donated by Boots.

The drive ensures a steady flow of essential hygiene products, delivering 4,750 wash bags twice a year to 58 SARCs.

The charity In Kind Direct, recently appointed as the trusted fulfilment and delivery partner for the Wash Bag Project, will be supporting SARCs across the country, including Swindon and Wiltshire's SARC.

A representative from Swindon and Wiltshire SARC said: "On behalf of our clients and service users, thank you for In Kind Direct's generosity, the care bags truly are a touch of kindness."

The partnership is focused on survivors' wellbeing, striving to provide other items such as clothes, period products, and men's personal care items, adding to the support already given.

Since the partnership launched, In Kind Direct, with the support of logistics partner TTS, has dispatched nearly 5,000 wash bags to 58 SARCs, aiding thousands of service users in feeling clean and cherished post-appointment.

Rosanne Gray, CEO of In Kind Direct, said: "Providing comfort and dignity during times of distress is incredibly important and we know the wash bags can make a significant difference to someone's life and onward journey after leaving the centre.

"We are very proud of this partnership, enabling us to provide people with a small gesture of comfort at such a distressing time of their life."

A spokesperson for Blue Sky Centre SARC in Nuneaton added: "I can say that handing over the washbags is always a high point of our interaction with our clients.

"They are hugely grateful, and it helps them leave us in a far more positive frame of mind than when they arrived."

Recognising organisations that support survivors of rape and sexual assault, Her Majesty the Queen hosted a reception at Buckingham Palace on May 1 to relaunch the Wash Bag Project, attended by In Kind Direct.
