A lane on one of Swindon's busiest roads will shut until the morning after urgent repairs overran.
The inbound lane on Thamesdown Road between Thresher Drive and Elstree Way was due to open at 6am on Friday following an overnight closure, but Swindon Borough Council said this will not happen until 6am on Saturday (June 1) instead.
In addition, the Elstree Way junction (Abbeymeads and Ashbrake) will remain closed until 5am on Monday, June 3.
This is so that Thames Water can carry out work following the burst water main last week.
A Swindon Borough Council spokesperson explained: “The work was due to be completed last night but an emergency road closure on the M4 prevented materials being delivered.
“Further investigation of the road surface has also meant additional work is needed.”
A diversion route is in place, with residential access maintained throughout.
The AA reports “overrunning” roadworks and consequent delays, especially from the Blunsdon Bypass exit southbound.
Last Thursday, May 23, the A-road resembled a river after a burst pipe ruptured the road surface at the Elstree Way junction creating a large hole and releasing gallons of water around 3.30pm.
Police closed off a large section of the road near the Toby Carvery and Blunsdon Arms while the utility company did its best to stop the waters, with the road cleared by 7pm.
Swindon Borough Council said the road suffered extensive flood damage.
