Police officers in Wiltshire have opened a knife surrender bin for the first time since it was installed last month, to find out if it has made any difference in the efforts to get weapons off the streets.

The permanent knife surrender bin was installed as part of knife crime awareness week in Devizes, outside Wiltshire Football Association headquarters in Green Lane.

It gives people the opportunity to anonymously hand in any knives or bladed articles they are carrying in a safe and legal way.

Since the installation, the bin has not been opened, but Devizes Police opened it on Tuesday, June 4 to find 21 knives and bladed articles had been disposed of.

They assure people the bin has been designed with safety in mind, to prevent it from being broken into, and emphasise the motto ‘bin a knife, save a life.
