A drink driver who raced down the M4 near Swindon at more than 100mph has lost his licence.

Officers in an unmarked vehicle joined the motorway at Junction 15 at around 1.15am on May 28 and saw 31-year-old Christopher Chitima - of Broad Walk in Knowle - speeding in the direction of Bristol.

Police followed the vehicle, which reached triple-digit speeds well above the 70mph limit.

They stopped and breathalysed him near Junction 16 and he gave a reading of 40 microgrammes of alcohol in 100ml of breath.

Officers arrested the motorist and took him into custody. 

At a hearing in Swindon Magistrates' Court on June 12, the defendant pleaded guilty to drink driving.

He has now been disqualified from driving for 40 months, fined £384 and required to pay a victim surcharge of £154 and court costs of £85.

PC Tom Webster of the Roads Policing Unit said: “These are incredibly dangerous and reckless speeds to be driving at on any occasion, let alone when you have been drinking.

“There is simply no excuse for Chitima’s actions and he now faces a lengthy spell off the roads.

“Our Roads Policing Unit will continue to target and clamp down on drink and drug drivers on our roads as we know it can and does lead to fatal collisions.”
