The listed entrance gates and supports to the Lawns from High Street in Old Town could soon be mended.

Swindon Borough Council has applied to its own planning department to repair the stonework damaged when it was struck by a lorry in late 2023.

The council’s application says: “The stone piers and gated entrance and date back to the early 19th Century  and were formerly part of the entrance lodges demolished 1963.

“We would like to carry out repairs and reinstatement, only where required, to the south arch and pillar after damage caused by a road traffic collision.

 “A lorry hit and partially demolished the south pier and archway. This work is necessary in order to reinstate the archway to its former condition.”

It adds: “Despite the heavy damage to the exterior of the structure, upon visual assessment, the integrity of the internal structure seems to be in good condition. Therefore, there should be no need to implement any structural reinforcement.”

Work would involve repairing or replacing damaged stonework in the grade II-listed structure, and re-mortaring.

Pedestrian access to The Lawns from High Street will be available through the north arch while the south arch and pillar are being repaired.
