Swindon is not among the worst towns and cities in England for fly-tipping offences, a study has revealed.
A study conducted by the research team at Cartridge Save has analysed the worst English cities for dumping rubbish illegally, with Swindon ranking 80th out of 109.
Durham topped the list with 1,129 incidents per 10,000 people, with 5,702 total incidents, whereas Swindon had 2,289 incidents and 125 per 10,000 people.
Ian Cowley, spokesperson from Cartridge Save, said: “The study exposes a worrying trend of fly-tipping in English cities.
“Clearer government policies, responsible business practices, and individual accountability are all essential.
“Residents can make a big difference by utilising council waste services and checking waste carrier licenses. By working together, we can keep England's cities clean and healthy.”
Swindon Borough Council’s website says: “Fly-tipping is not only a criminal offence, it is a blight on our environment and a hazard to local wildlife.
"Fly-tipping is also extremely costly to tidy up. On average per annum we spend over £200k both collecting and enforcing fly-tipping, diverting much-needed funds away from other priority areas.”
It advises people to report offences through their website, as well as only hiring licensed waste carriers to dispose of items responsibly.
