A carnival is returning to the Swindon area for its 99th year.

Wroughton Carnival will be held around the Weir Field from 12pm on Saturday, July 6, with 60 different stalls selling gifts, jewellery and other wares along with 10 food stalls offering samosas, roast potatoes, and burgers amongst other tasty treats, and an array of entertainment.

The highlight of the afternoon will be an hour-long parade full of colourful floats that makes its way around the village on Swindon’s outskirts from The Fox and Hounds pub at 1pm.

Around 30 Harley Davidsons will lead the procession and be on display afterwards.

Four live bands will perform, a dog show will begin at 2.45pm, and guests can enjoy watching gymnastic displays, stilt walkers, and martial arts.

Louise May is part of the six-strong committee that organises the annual event and recruits dozens of volunteers who kindly give up their time to help out on the day.

She said: “Wroughton has a very strong and active community that has kept this long tradition going while a lot of other villages stopped having carnivals.

“It takes all year to organise but it’s worth it and people are happy to help put on an afternoon of great entertainment.

“We’re already thinking about the theme for the 100th anniversary next year.”
