A Stratton café that opened inside the area's library earlier this year has received its first food hygiene rating.

Brew Book staff served their first customers in April after the local parish council sought ideas to transform part of Beechcroft Library and picked Hannah Fruen's as their favourite.

The 35-year-old has since seen a strong show of support from people in the area and won a Local Hero award for her efforts.

Within a week of receiving this honour, she and her five-strong team learned they had passed a recent food hygiene inspection with flying colours, getting the full five out of five 'Very Good' rating.

Hannah said: "We were working really hard towards this and keeping our fingers crossed, so it was amazing to hear that we'd received the highest rating.

"It's been very busy but everyone seems happy to wait for a table or share one with someone else.

"The first day was crazy - there were queues out the door for hours - and since then, it's grown even more than we anticipated.

"Everyone said the area had been desperate for a café so it's nice that they have embraced it and kept coming back.

"More than 100 loyalty cards have already been filled in, which shows how much people like this place.

"They say how friendly we are and how comfortable it feels, which is lovely, and more people have joined the library since we opened, which is great."

The community-focused café includes shelves full of goods from local businesses, art from Swindon artists on the walls, and a newly added pay-it-forward board where customers generously cover the cost of someone else's cuppa.

Hannah added: "People want to give something back because they have gone through times when they needed help.

"We want to help the community so being able to bring in older customers and people who need help and a chat is really nice."

It serves drinks, snacks, cakes from local bakers, and various breakfast and lunch options will be expanded when the new menu launches in August.

Regular events include Friends quiz nights, jewellery-making workshops, a craft fair, and an upcoming Taylor Swift-themed get-together thought up by an entrepreneurial 11-year-old.

Several people nominated Hannah Fruen for the Stratton St Margaret Parish Council Local Hero award which is proudly on display.

She added: "I cried my eyes out when they told me. We couldn't have done this without our supervisor, Hannah Fishlock, she's amazing."

Hannah Fishlock added: "We are all very proud of her."
