Residents have shared fears that they will be trapped in their estate while resurfacing work takes place.

Volker Highways and Swindon Borough Council wrote to householders who live near Hook Street to tell them of the upcoming roadworks in the area - which will require a full road closure.

The work is expected to start on Thursday, July 25 and is scheduled to take place between 8am and 5pm and it is due to last for two days.

The letter added: "We have been working closely with the council's streetworks team in order to reduce disruption and to complete works as quickly as possible.

"Therefore, in order for Volker Highways to complete the works as efficiently as possible, and reduce the number of days working in the area, a road closure was agreed."

However, Grange Park residents who live in the Bess Road and King Henry Drive area have questioned how they will go about their days during the period of the closure, saying they will be trapped in their estates.

The councillor for the area, Sean Wilson, raised these concerns with the council and posted this update: "The closures along Hook Street will be in place between from 8am-5pm and access to and from Bess Road will be restricted between these hours.

"The closures will be taken down and access to Hook Street and Bess Road will return to normal between the hours of 5pm-8am.

"However, if residents require access to and from Bess Road at any point we recommend they liaise with the gatemen on the day and they will advise and guide residents out of the closure when it is safe to do so.

"Swindon Borough Council will contact the affected residents and provide assurances that if and when required, they will be able to move in and out of Bess Road."

In response, one member of the public wrote: "So to get out of our street on to the Windmill roundabout we have to take a five-and-a-half mile detour?"

Another said: "That’s ridiculous Sean. There are nearly 300 houses in this section with one route in and out. If that junction needs to be closed at all they need to prioritise getting it open again as soon as possible"

Others asked if people would be able to come and go from Oatlands, to which councillor Wilson replied he would have to ask.
