A man in his 30s has been arrested after being rescued from scaffolding on Regent Circus in Swindon.

Large numbers of emergency responders were deployed to the town centre complex at around 8.30pm on Wednesday, July 17, including police and fire crews.

Witnesses reported that a man, who police say appeared to be drunk, had climbed scaffolding on the building and reached the second floor.

Officers located the man but said he failed to engage with them.

Firefighters were called to support and technical rescue teams from Stratton arrived alongside an aerial ladder platform from Swindon Fire Station shortly before 9pm.

The suspect was eventually arrested on suspicion of criminal damage and intentionally causing a public nuisance, around an hour after police arrived.

He was removed from the roof in the aerial unit and taken into custody.

Officers left the scene by around 10.30pm.

During the incident, several roads were closed, and the public was diverted away.

A spokesperson for the force said: “A man in his 30s has been arrested on suspicion of criminal damage and intentionally causing a public nuisance following an incident in Regent Circus, Swindon.

“Officers were called to the area at around 8:30pm on Wednesday following reports a man was climbing scaffolding and appeared to be drunk.

“The man remains in custody for questioning.”
