Travellers have set up camp on a Swindon recreation ground near the town centre.

Around six caravans and five horses now occupy the Westcott Recreation Ground near Wootton Bassett Road.

Police are aware.

They previously appeared at Westcott Recreation Ground in May.

Earlier in the year, traveller's caravans were spotted on the empty and unopened multi-million pound Southern Access Road below the M4 amid reports of fly-tipping in the area.

One group entered and secured the old Wroughton Park and Ride, staying there until Swindon Borough Council obtained a court order giving them the power to enter the site and move them along.

Charity Friends, Families, Travellers explains: “Gypsis and Travellers usually park in public spaces because there aren’t enough sites or negotiated stopping places in the area and there isn’t any other place to stop.

“Councils have a responsibility to identify land for Travellers to live and stop in their area, but the vast majority fail to do this.”

A Swindon Borough Council spokesperson said: “We’re aware of a group of Travellers that have arrived at Westcott Recreation Ground. The group has advised that they intend to move on by next weekend.

“We’ve worked closely with Wiltshire Police to engage with the group and believe there are no welfare or safety issues.

“Should the group remain longer than they have indicated we will look at what enforcement action can be taken.

“If anyone has any concerns please report these direct to Wiltshire Police via 111.”
