Nearly a dozen Swindon roads will close over the next month as part of a major roadworks scheme.

Swindon Borough Council has announced nine locations will benefit from a £4 million maintenance programme being carried out during the summer holidays.

These improvement works will include essential resurfacing of the routes, and form part of the council’s annual major and minor road resurfacing programme.

The programme focuses on fixing deteriorating road surfaces across the borough and has already seen work on Tadpole Lane and Thamesdown Drive in July.

Throughout the rest of July and August, Hook Street, Inverary Road, Ferndale Road, Gooch Street, Huntley Close, Markham Close, Dawlish Road, Shakespeare Path, and Boscombe Road will undergo similar roadworks.

The first three roads selected will be shut between 8am and 6pm on the days that work is scheduled to take place.

Daytime closures will also be utilised at the remaining sites.

The council says this traffic management will be in place to complete the resurfacing as quickly as possible.

Councillor Chris Watts, Swindon Borough Council’s cabinet member for the environment and transport, says inspectors have identified these roads as being in “really poor condition.”

He said: “We have a long list of roads which are in need of repair across Swindon, and these ones are on our priority list and have been identified by our inspectors as being in really poor condition.

“A lack of investment over the years means there are many more roads that require our attention, but we only have so much capital funding to carry out this work and we have to manage this carefully to keep the borough’s roads safe and in as good a condition as we can for local residents.

“We have planned this work to coincide with the summer holidays to minimise inconvenience, but we would just ask those directly affected to bear with us while we carry out these essential repairs over the coming weeks.”

Access will be maintained for residents and drivers have been advised to check the council’s website for up-to-date diversion information.
