Travellers have set up camp in a West Swindon park.

Witnesses saw approximately 10 caravans and associated vehicles parked around the 40-hectare community woodland of Shaw Forest Park on Thursday.

The lock on the main gate has been cut off and the security bar has been removed to allow the vehicles to access the public open spaces.

One witness was frustrated by them appearing at the park “again” and speculated that the gate had been tied open “presumably to allow more travellers to access the field”.

This sighting comes days after horses and caravans were spotted on Westcott Recreation Ground near Wootton Bassett Road for the second time this year.

The group there advised Swindon Borough Council and Wiltshire Police on July 19 that they intended to move away from the site by this weekend.

Earlier in the year, traveller's caravans were spotted on the empty and unopened multi-million pound Southern Access Road below the M4 amid reports of fly-tipping in the area.

One group entered and secured the old Wroughton Park and Ride, staying there until Swindon Borough Council obtained a court order giving them the power to enter the site and move them along.
